The law of comparative advantage, discovered by the famous 19th-century economist David Ricardo, states that even if country A is better at producing both bananas and balloons than country B, these two nations can still benefit from trade simply by specializing in what they are best at and then trading. And this ties into opportunity cost, because the reason why comparative advantage exists, is that if country A spends time producing say balloons that means that factors of production (land, labour, and capital) are diverted away from producing bananas.
